Getting Started
-
Not at all! Whether you’re a seasoned competitor or just love swimming for fun and fitness, you’ll fit right in. We have swimmers of all backgrounds—some with past team experience, and many who are simply here for the structure, the community, and a great workout.
-
You do not have to compete—many of our members are here just for the fun, fitness, and community. That said, if you do want to train for meets, open water swims, or triathlons, we’re here to support your goals too. Whatever your motivation, we’re happy to have you.
-
Not at all! We welcome swimmers of all speeds and fitness levels. Whether you're working your way back into the water or training for your next big race, you'll find a lane—and a community—that fits you just right.
-
Absolutely! We’d love for you to test the waters first—literally. You’re welcome to swim with us for a 2-week trial before deciding whether to dive in fully and register.
-
Easy! Just reach out to us, and we’ll guide you through the 2-week trial, registration, and any YMCA membership info. We’ll make it as smooth as a flip turn!
Practice Details
-
You can jump in anytime—literally! There’s no official “season” for Masters swimming, so whether it’s January, July, or somewhere in between, you’re welcome to start whenever it works for you.
-
Not at all! While we offer practices six days a week, most swimmers find their sweet spot at 3–4 times weekly. Some pop in just once a week—and that’s totally okay too. Come when it works for you!
-
Yes, you can! As long as you’re a dues-paying YMCA member, you’re welcome to swim on your own schedule. Many of our members do just that. You won’t have a coach on deck during those solo sessions, but you’ll still be part of the team and get access to workouts and resources.
-
Our workouts are designed by experienced coaches and tailored for a range of goals—from improving technique to building endurance or speed. You’ll see a mix of drills, intervals, and challenges to keep things fresh and fun. And don't worry—we always adjust for different ability levels.
-
Yes! One of the best parts of being in a Masters program is access to on-deck coaching. Our coaches are there to lead the workout, help with technique, answer questions, and cheer you on—all in a supportive and inclusive environment.
-
Just the basics: swimsuit, goggles, towel, and maybe a swim cap if you have longer hair. After a while with us, you may want to consider getting fins, paddles, pull body, and kick board. But don’t worry we’ll help you get started with all that when you’re ready for it
Membership & Costs
-
Great question! Your YMCA membership gives you access to awesome amenities such as the pool, fitness center, and sauna as well as the Greater Cincinnati YMCA network. However, Masters is a specialized program with extra perks—like expert coaching, dedicated lanes just for our practices, access to a registered dietitian and sports physical therapist, gear discounts, and the occasional thank-you gift for being part of our swim family.
-
Not necessarily! You don’t need a full YMCA membership to swim with us. If you're not already a Y member, you'll pay a higher club fee—which essentially includes a limited-access YMCA membership.
This gives you access to the pool and locker rooms, but only during our scheduled practice times. It doesn’t include use of other YMCA amenities (like the fitness center or sauna), and it doesn’t grant access to other branches in the Greater Cincinnati YMCA network.
-
A USMS membership is not required to join our team if you’re just here for the fitness, fun, and camaraderie. You will only need a USMS membership if you plan to compete in USMS-sanctioned meets. Curious about meets or how to sign up? We’re happy to help with that too!
-
Every Masters program is a little different! Some groups require a USMS (U.S. Masters Swimming) membership as part of their club policy or insurance requirements.
We don’t require a USMS membership to swim with us because we’re part of the YMCA and already covered under the YMCA’s insurance policies. That means you can swim with us for fitness, fun, and friendship—no USMS membership required—unless you decide to compete in a USMS-sanctioned meet.
If you do want to compete, we’ll help you get signed up with USMS when the time comes!
-
Yes, we understand that life happens. If you’ll be away for an extended period or need to pause due to injury, let us know—we’ll work with you on membership options.
Miscellaneous
-
We’d love to have you! Visiting USMS swimmers are always welcome to join us when they’re in the area. Just a heads up: if you’re not a YMCA member, you’ll need to grab a guest pass at the front desk. If you’re staying a while (lucky us!), we do ask that you become a temporary paying member of the team.
-
Definitely! We have a monthly Donut Day, occasional team outings, and other fun ways to stay connected beyond the water. Swimming is great, but the friendships might be the best part.
-
We don’t currently offer formal open water practices, but many of our swimmers train for open water races or triathlons and are happy to share tips and meet up for weekend swims when the weather’s warm!
